My job took me this past week to Atlantic City,New Jersey. Its nicknamed “The worlds Famous Playground.” Atlantic City is a resort city in Atlantic County,New Jersey,US., known for its casinos, boardwalk and beach. In 2010 its population was around 39,558 and today it is pretty much the same.Located on Absecon Island,it was incorporated on May 1,1854,from portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township. Atlantic City was the inspiration for the american version of the board game Monopoly, especially the street names.Since 1921,Atlantic City has been the location for the Miss America PagentTrump Taj Mahal was opened on April 2,1990…The casino was inaugurated by its then owner Donald Trump in 1990,and was built at a total cost of nearly one billion dollars. The Taj Mahal came to the brink of closure in 2014 as its parent company went through bankruptcy, but ultimately remained open under the new ownership of Icahn Enterprises. On August 3,2016,it was announced that the Trump Taj Mahal would close after Labor Day. It closed at 5:59am on October 10,2016.The casino shut down having failed to reach a deal with its union workers to restore health care and pension benefits that were taken away from them in bankruptcy court.Nearly 3000 workers lost their jobs.
Take a walk on the Boardwalk…..The first boardwalk was built in 1870 along a portion of the beach in an effort to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies.Because of its effectiveness and popularity, the boardwalk was expanded in length and width, and modified several times in subsequent years. The historic length of the boardwalk, before the destructive 1944 great hurricane was about 7 miles and it extended from Atlantic City to Longport, through Ventnor and Margate. If you would like to learn more about Atlantic City…click on this link Atlantic City Also if you would like to view more photos on Atlantic City please visit this link andrethibault.smugmug.com Thanks!!
